MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS ANNOUNCES THE ROLL OUT OF CHIP-EMBEDDED PASSPORTS.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudeto Ablakwa (MP) announced the introduction of Chip - Embedded Passports at a press briefing which was held on Wednesday, 23rd April 2025. In his address, Hon. Okudeto Ablakwa (MP) informed that the Biometric Passport, will be replaced with the Poly Carbonate Chip - Embedded passport from Monday, 28th April, 2025. Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa stated that the Chip - Embedded Passport, is a requirement by the International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) and will enhance border security, reduce identity fraud, and ease the burden of international travel for Ghanaians.
In addition to the transitioning of passport types, the Honourable Minister informed of the following: i. 24-hour operations, in line with President Mahama’s 24-hour economy policy; ii. Secure delivery services to enhance convenience; iii. e-Tracking of one’s passport processing to allow citizens effectively monitor the process; and iv. the reduction of application fees by 30% will also be implemented. A nationwide sensitization exercise will also commence to educate the general public on the new passport and passport reforms, to ensure that Ghanaians are well-informed of the new Passport.
